Fun new interactive from the White House. It shows the properties owned by Uncle Sam that are slated for closure or sale. (link)Every State in the Union has a warehouse, office building, bridge or road. There are 12,000 on the list.
As is often the case, California is on top of the heap.
I was surprised to see the number of bridges and roads on the list. From Humbolt County:
Net-net I guess this a good thing. There's no crown jewels on these lists. Still, a sign of the times.
No Green
Nice out yesterday, so I went for a walk to the Croton dam. This is a picture of the barriers to the roadway:
After 911 someone found information that suggested this old dam was a terrorist target. It’s part of NYC’s water system. It was armed guards 24/7 at first. Now, the less the formidable obstacles above.
This was once my ‘direct’ route to town. Does the death of OBL mean my shortcut is going to reopen? Not a chance. It stays closed until the threat levels falls to Green.
I doubt that will ever happen. It would be a mistake to think that it will.

Re: CA structures. If you would read carefully you might notice that most of the structures are in national parks, national monuments, national recreation areas. Basically they are restoring them to their natural state. One of the reasons why Redwood NP, a former logging area, is so prominent. The government is actually spending a lot of money to get rid of old logging roads etc. - not trying to sell them.

ReplyDeleteIt is not clear what protection the "barriers" provide.
How many of the sales could end up being sale/leasebacks? One surprising thing about the US Government is that they don't own many of the buildings that they work in -- for example, all of the new NIH buildings in Silver Spring, MD are structured as "credit tenant leases" with rent payments not subject to appropriations, so that Congress can't cancel payments.

The point of the barriers is to prevent terrorist attack, since no terrorist mastermind is so devious or persistent as to not be completely dissuaded by a somewhat large rock.
